Child-inclusive
Wedding Ceremonies
Almost 50% of weddings in Australia are between couples who already
have children (his, hers or theirs), and this presents wonderful
opportunities to celebrate the wedding as a family event.
A child-inclusive wedding goes beyond dressing the child up and having
him or her walk down the aisle as a page-boy, ring-bearer or flower
girl, act as an usher, or stand up with Mum or Dad (or Grandma or
Grandpa) as a junior
bridesmaid or junior groomsman.
The children who are important to you can be involved in your wedding
in a way that strengthens the relationship between you, honours the
child, and reflects your emotional bond with the child.
You can include as many children as you
want - here I am gathering and organising the 18 children who were
involved in the welcoming ritual created especially for a very romantic
couple to open their ceremony at Newstead park.
Exactly how a child is included in the ceremony will depend on that
child's personality, age, relationship to bride, groom or both, and the
other ceremony choices you have made.
Where the bride and groom have children from previous relationships the
wedding ceremony is creating a new family structure, and the feelings
of the children about the wedding may well be mixed, so they
should be carefully considered. Some children may want to be very
involved. Others may not. I'm happy to include the children as much as
they wish to be included in both the wedding and the planning process.
Your wedding ceremony can be celebrated as a family event. This is a
warm and wonderful way to celebrate the family where the bride and
groom where the children are theirs, and rituals such as the sand
ceremony are entirely appropriate.
Where one or more children are making a transition into a stepfamily, a
great deal of care should be taken to ensure that the children don't
feel as if they are giving up their individuality (so a ritual that
gives something to the child, rather than takes it away is a more
sensitive choice).
I work carefully and mindfully with you to ensure that your children
are included to the extent with which they are comfortable and enriched
rather than diminished by your wedding ceremony.
A child-inclusive wedding can incorporate a formal naming for the child
or children. See Combo Weddings for
more information about having a combined Wedding and Naming Ceremony.
But most of all, a child-inclusive wedding is also a child-friendly
wedding, one where children are welcome and made to feel so, whether or
not they are included in the ceremony.
Thank
you again for your patience, persistence and good humour throughout our
entire
wedding process. One of the photos I have attached is of you speaking,
and if
you look in the background my niece Gracie is behind you pulling on
your
microphone stand. I like this photo because I think it is a great
representation of the service that you provide. As with every other
aspect of
your professional and obliging performance for us, you happily pushed
on with
your job despite the
obvious
interruptions. - Beth & Kurt
