Wedding ceremony music

Music can add so much to your wedding. It sets the mood, it evokes emotions.

When choosing music for your ceremony think soundtrack. Your music will signal what is happening, will emphasise special moments, and will assist in creating the atmosphere you want for your wedding. How you walk down the aisle is a much an opportunity to express yourselves and your joy at getting married as the music you choose.

And you don't have to walk - you can have fun and boogie down the aisle. See how one US couple did just that to the surprise, joy and delight of their guests.

There are four places where music has an important role to play -

Before the ceremony starts
Commonly called the Prelude traditionally this is quiet and reflective music (influenced by its use as people entered the church and took their places to wait for the ceremony to start). In a civil wedding you have no such restrictions, so choose a medley of music that means something to you, that sets the mood.

Entrance of the bridal party
Commonly called the Processional this can be the traditional entrance of the bride and her attendants, or can include the groom and/or his attendants. The traditional piece is The Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin  by Richard Wagner, commonly called "Here Comes the Bride" but it is only one possibility.

The Signing of the Register

The walk back up the aisle by the Bride and Groom -
The Recessional.
The traditional piece is the Wedding March from A Midsummer Nights Dream by Felix Mendelssohn

If you're having a Unity Candle without narrative as part of the ceremony you would choose music to accompany that as well.

The possibilities are limitless - choose classical music, contemporary music, songs from today or yesteryear that mean something to you.

And so is the form the music takes - have live music or use a CD.

As an integral part of my service
  • I provide you with advice on choosing and using music in your ceremony
  • I have a number of CDs of traditional and more contemporary popular wedding ceremony music which you are welcome to use on the day.
  • I brief the CD operator and/or musicians
