Marry On SundayAbout 15% of weddings in Australia take place on a Sunday, a day that is increasing in popularity for a range of purely practical reasons. Sunday wasn't even on the radar when that popular wedding superstition rhyme, for which there is absolutely no evidence, was penned.
Monday for health
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best day of all.
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
Saturday for no luck at all.

In fact, I've only ever been able to find one reference to Sunday as a good day for weddings, and none as a bad or unlucky day. Way back in 1914, someone writing advice for brides suggested that getting married on Sunday is a sure sign of a fortunate union. Back then, unless you were Jewish, you would have been lucky to have been able to get married on Sunday - the Registry Offices were closed (as most still are) and churches were busy with normal Sunday services.

Unlike the names of other days of the week, the names of which we get from Norse traditions, what we call Saturday and Sunday has come down to us directly from the Romans.

Some fun reasons for getting married on Sunday

Being ruled by the sun, Sunday is deemed to confer light, warmth, and energy on a relationship. And it is the best choice if your budget is small but you want the convenience of a weekend wedding.

Benefits of having your wedding on a Sunday

Marrying on a Sunday gives you the benefits of a weekday together with the benefits of a weekend wedding.
  • Many venues are cheaper - not necessarily because they discount the per-head cost, but often because they have a lower minimum spend, and hence are more affordable if you have a smaller guest list
  • Greater possibility that your dream venue and dream wedding vendors will be available
  • Sunday weddings tend to wrap up earlier than Saturday weddings, so your bar bill will be lighter, and you can start the after party earlier
  • It is usually a convenient day for your guests
  • It is a very good day if travel is involved for your guests
  • Fewer people will need to take annual leave, and those that do will be able to take less leave than if you were marrying on a weekday
  • Fewer people will decline the invitation
  • Couples with children will find it easier to find childcare
