A ritual is a symbolic act, a visual expression of an intention. When used in a ritual, a symbol is a means by which we convey, in an intuitive rather than logical way, the transcendent. Therefore a genuine symbol does what it symbolises. The exchange of vows and rings, now the central ritual and therefore an integral part of any marriage or commitment ceremony, both symbolise and create the union. But those are not the only symbolic rituals that you can include in your ceremony.
